Why do humans crave collective singing and expression? The Longing For Collective Voicing is a series of experimental music theatre workshops exploring this very question. We will use sound and body to respond to this ancient impulse.
From the work chants (号子 hào zi) shouted during tug-of-war, hauling, or boat pulling to synchronize effort, to the encouraging cheers of ”Jiayou!(加油)“ in sports competitions; from the group calls of animals like turkeys and goats, to the roars our ancestors uttered for hunting and defense; from ancient prophetic folk rhymes (谶谣 chèn yáo) and children‘s rhymes, to the orally transmitted folk songs in the Airs of the States section of the Classic of Poetry (《诗经·风》), and even collective curses like the saying, ”A thousand pointing fingers can cause death without illness.“(“千人所指,无病而死”)

第二场工作坊关注人声中的情绪,以及在集体效力中它不可预计的效果,而材料将转向语气词和具象的文本,并尝试Sprechchor(说话合唱——众人以语言而非旋律的方式同步或交错发声)的形式。
The second workshop focuses on emotion in the human voice and its unpredictable effects within collective agency. The material will shift toward interjections and embodied text, while experimenting with the form of Sprechchor—spoken chorus, in which multiple people vocalize in synchrony or in overlapping patterns through speech rather than melody. In addition, an object will appear in the second workshop: the fan, exploring the process from “fanning” to “inciting.”
Three days before the workshop begins, participants will send me a recording of their own voice made on their phones. I will pair the participants and send each person’s recording to their partner, who will need to learn the recording, including both its content and tone. In other words, before meeting the person, they will first come to know their voice. On the day of the workshop, they will find their partner through sound and form small groups.
